Significant Changes in the Australian Immigration 2025

Australia has retained its position as a leading destination for migration. Over the years, Australia has been inviting young, skilled professionals, students and families to migrate to the continent and become permanent residents and later citizens. Australia, with open arms, has accepted PR holders as their citizens, leaving no stone unturned in luring applicants to make Australia their Home.

Significantly, Australia has been going through some major changes in terms of immigration policies effective from July 1, 2025. There is a list of changes that you might want to explore before applying for Australian Immigration.

Changes in the Australian Immigration Policies 2025

Department of Home Affairs Australia has suggested some significant changes in the immigration policies, such as:

 1.  New Minimum Salary Threshold

One of the major changes predicted under Australian Immigration policies is that the new minimum salary requirement under the Core Skills Stream is expected to rise to AUD 76,515 from AUD 73,150. The Specialist Skills Income Threshold is expected to rise to AUD 141,210 from AUD 135,000. The Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold is expected to rise to AUD 76515 from AUD 73150. This, on the positive side, would attract more compensation from the employer, but in turn, the employer would also expect to have more in-built skills required for the occupation.

 2.  Visa Fee Hikes

Another change that would affect visa applications is a rise in the visa application fee for student visas. This change will certainly affect visa applications as it is presently AUD 1600 and will be AUD 2000 from July 1, 2025.

The partner visa fee would also rise from AUD 9095 to AUD 9365.

The Skilled Migration Program visa types include visas under Subclass 189, Subclass 190, and Subclass 491 would rise from AUD 4765 to AUD 4910.

The Subclass visa 186, the Employer Nomination Scheme fees are also increased by AUD 4770 to AUD 491.

3.  Revised Point System

Australian immigration is a point-based selection system that requires at least 65 points to qualify and apply for the visa. No doubt, the point system will remain the same but a significant change has been brought under the point system. Earlier, there used to be 15 points added to the point assessment grid applicable when there is a work experience of more than 5 years in the nominated occupation. Applications effective from July 1, 2025, will now receive 20 points in the work experience category.

 4.  Family Reunion

The Australian government has always had a softer side for family reunification. Earlier, there was a temporary visa Subclass 309 which allowed partners to stay in Australia for a year and then convert it to PR via Subclass 100,single-stage but now tables have turned as now the partner visa application will transform into a single- stage model. This will eliminate the double application process, reducing cost and effort.

There has been a slight change in the Parent visa category, as earlier there was a backlog in the application process, but now immigration policies are looking at providing a 3 or 5-year stay for parents with a pathway to permanent residency.

 5.  Student Work Rights

Regardless of many changes in the immigration policies, there is a positive change that would help students during their course of stay. Earlier, undergraduate students were allowed only to work for 20 hours per week. Now they are allowed to work for 24 hours a week, as it would help them financially.

 6.  Enrolment Cap System

For the year 2024-2025, the Australian immigration policies had an enrolment cap of 185,000 spots, but the Australian government has also thought of implementing an enrolment cap system, which may prioritise applications from high-priority education sectors. The number of invitations may increase from July, 2025.

These significant changes will transform Australian Immigration policies for skilled migration, international education and family reunification. These changes will further make the Australian economy strong, reduce labour shortage and bring sustainable growth. On a positive note, these changes will bring better opportunities for applicants, but will also create chaos in the visa application process.

To reduce visa application hurdles, consulting a professional guide will remove all the application problems. Province Immigration’s expert consultants will speed up your visa application and will help you make Australia your home.
