    Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189

The subclass 189 visa, often regarded as the Skilled Independent Visa, is one of the major pathways through which an Australian PR visa can be obtained. Viewed as skill migration programs, subclass 189, subclass 190, and subclass 491 are eligible visa programs for Australian permanent residency.

Australia, known for its immigration-friendly policies, has been inviting applications for a long time to meet its labour shortage requirements. From students to skilled professionals, all have been fascinated by the world-class infrastructure and healthcare facilities that Australia offers to its permanent residents. Australian PR holders are fortunate that after residing in Australia for 3 straight years, they become eligible for citizenship.

By virtue of independent skills, Subclass 189 employs the applicant’s skill as the base for selection, regardless of any other factor, such as employer nomination via Subclass 190 or nomination from an Australian state or territory via Subclass 491 for permanent residency.

Australian PR can be achieved through the subclass 189 by qualifying for 65 points in the point assessment grid and having an occupation listed on the Australia skilled occupation list and recognised by the skill assessment authority.

Benefits of skilled independent visa (Subclass 189)

    • Permanent residency The visa provides individuals with permanent resident status, enabling them to work, study, and reside in Australia for life.
    • Freedom of movement Unlike other visas tied to the location or the sponsor, 189 visa holders can live or work anywhere in Australia.
    • Pathway to citizenship After four years of staying in Australia as a permanent resident, visa holders are eligible to apply for Australian citizenship.
    • Healthcare access : Visa holders are eligible to register on Medicare, which is Australia's public health cover, so they have access to relatively affordable healthcare.
    • Family benefits Application can be made to include eligible family members who may be a partner, children, or dependents.
    • Social security benefits : Two years after living in Australia, visa holders can begin benefiting from some of Australia's social security benefits, including various financial assistance programs.
    • No nomination or sponsorship required The subclass 189 visa allows applicants to apply for PR based on their skills rather than getting employer or state nomination for the application of permanent residency.

    Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the Australian subclass visa 189, the applicant must adhere to

     1. The applicant must fall under the guided segment of age, i.e., not above 45 years.

    3. Have a relevant skill assessment assessed by the Australian Skill Assessment Authority.

    4. Competent Language Proficiency.

The Application Process for Subclass 189

    1.   Check Eligibility

Under this section, before applying for the Australian PR, the applicant must check all the eligibility criteria, such as

    ●      the factor of age, not to be above 45 years

    ●      IELTS score report for the language proficiency test

    ●      65 points on the assessment grid

    ●      Occupation listed on the Australia Skilled Occupation List

      2. Skill Assessment

After crossing the eligibility section, the applicant has to move through the skill assessment authority. Skill assessment is a process where Australian immigration determines if an applicant’s qualifications & work experience meet the standards required for their nominated occupation.

     3. Submit Expression of Interest (EOI)

The next step in this direction, after locking in all the eligibility criteria mentioned, is the submission of an expression of interest. The Expression of Interest employs applicants' motive and reason for migration, citing his educational background and work experience through SkillSelect.

SkillSelect is an online system governed by the Australian government that accepts EOI and later assesses them for further use.

    4. Wait for Invitation

Once the EOI has been submitted, the applicant is bound to wait for an Invitation To Apply from the Department of Home Affairs. After receiving the Invitation to Apply, gather all your documents, such as educational credentials, work experience letter, marital status, health status report, and language test report, and submit them along with the application. This is the most crucial step in this journey so far, as it decides the fate of applicants.

     5. Visa Grant

The applicant is bound to submit all the above-mentioned documents within 60 days of receiving ITA and await the visa grant and will receive a COPR (confirmation of permanent residence) letter.

Subclass 189 visa fees for Indian citizens

    • If the dependent is 18 years and below, an additional processing cost of AUD 1,230 is applied.
    • Biometrics and medical examinations roughly cost AUD 60 and AUD 350, respectively.

The cost of processing a Subclass 189 visa might fluctuate without prior notification from the government.

Australia skilled independent visa processing time

The processing time for Australian skilled independent visas generally takes up to 8 to 9 months. However, it may vary based on your nationality and the workload of the Australian High Commission.

One of the most sought-after pathways to attain Australian permanent residency, Subclass 189 allows skilled professionals to apply for PR. With no need for any employer or state sponsorship, subclass 189 offers maximum flexibility, freedom, and a clear route to permanent residency and later citizenship.
