IRCC Plans to introduce three new occupational categories for Canada Express Entry in 2026

The Canadian government is planning to introduce new Occupational categories for the Canada Express Entry program in 2026. New occupation categories comprises senior managers, scientists and researchers and military personnel, which would help individuals with these professionals to reside in Canada and become permanent residents.

This proposal is however, listed by IRCC has been on the Canadian government website post seeking public consultation, which is valid until September 3, 2025.

 Understand Category-based selection

Express Entry Program has been considered one of the fastest ways for candidates than other immigration programs such as PNP (Provincial Nominee Program) or Family sponsorship, or work permit.

Category based draws were introduced in 2023 to fulfill the labour shortage, especially in some skilled professions. These categories are revised annually according to the labour market needs.

 Unveiling New Categories

IRCC with the Canadian government has proposed various new categories, attracting more skilled professionals to immigrate to Canada and later reside as Canada permanent residents. The new categories are:

1.   Senior Managers

IRCC has proposed creating a profile of senior managers as a new category under the Express Entry program. The creation of such profiles for senior positions would accelerate the country’s competitiveness, economic growth and prosperity.

Though senior managers are employees equipped with knowledge and experience who oversee the operations of a company or organisation and lead a team of employees.

According to IRCC, the introduction of this category would bring a fresh perspective, accelerate digital transformation, enhance productivity, and contribute to organisational goals.

 2.   Scientists and Researchers

IRCC’s proposal of drawing scientists and researchers into new categories for selection would take the innovation sector to a new level. Bringing scientists and researchers from different countries, backgrounds, and technological experience at one place would boost the innovation sector, leading to the enhancement of productivity and performance.

However, which kind of researchers or scientists would make up to the list is yet to be revealed.

 3.   Military Personnel

The introduction of this new category has by far come as a surprise. Now applicants from military and defence background are also now eligible for application for Canada PR under Express Entry Program. This move can be seen as a positive perspective in supporting Canadian Armed Forces by prioritizing the selection of highly skilled military recruits from allied countries.

In early, 2025 IRCC has announced various categories under Express Entry Program as:

1.   French language proficiency

2.   Healthcare & social services

3.   Agriculture & agri-food occupations

4.   STEM

5.   Trades occupations

6.   Education

The introduction of new categories under the Express Entry Program will bridge skilled professionals from different backgrounds to migrate to Canada and become Canada permanent residents. Category based draws are considered as a significant move in aligning immigration with sectors in labour needs to be fulfilled by skilled professionals even if their CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) score are not that elite.
