How To Convert Canada Study Permit Into Canadian PR

Over the years, international students have chosen Canada for study due to its reputable universities, educational systems, and the chance to earn valuable work experience in Canada.

You can become a permanent resident of Canada by obtaining the required work experience and a Canadian education. This is because international students who have completed their education at a Designated Learning Institution(DLI) in Canada get additional points in the Express Entry System, which makes their profile very competitive in the Express Entry Pool.

However, Canadian education doesn’t guarantee a pathway towards Canadian Permanent residency. Meanwhile, the Canadian Federal Government provides various pathways for international students to work and settle down in Canada after their graduation.

Further, it depends upon various factors, such as the candidate’s skills, educational and professional qualifications, and occupation.

Over the past few months, the Canadian Immigration Authority (IRCC) (Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada) has been changing its Canada Immigration policy to align it with its labor market requirements better.

The growing pool of eligible candidates makes it difficult for international students to transform their study permits to Canadian PR.

If you are one of those international students who want to call Canada their new home, this article is just for you because here we are going to discuss how you can transform your Canadian study permit into a Canadian Permanent Residency Status. But, before proceeding with this article, let us explain to you the meaning of Canada PR.

What is Canadian PR?

The most qualified applicant can live, work, and study anywhere in Canada with the legal right to permanent residence. However, holders of Canadian permanent residence are not entitled to vote or apply for positions with the government, unlike citizens. But at the same time, they enjoy the following benefits.

  1. Live and work in Canada.
  2. Social Security Benefits
  3. Exposure to world-renowned healthcare and education system
  4. Pathway to Canadian Citizenship
  5. Career Opportunities

How to get Canadian PR through a Canada study permit?

You must be thinking about how to transform your study permit into permanent residency in Canada. Fear not—we've got the step-by-step list below.

  1. Stay Up-to-Date

The Canada immigration laws are subjected to get alter in response to changes in the national economy. Staying up to date with the changing Canadian immigration policies can help international students stay informed about the changing eligibility criteria of different programs.

For instance, the Canadian federal government announced earlier this year that international students are no longer allowed to apply for a post-graduate work Permit if they have enrolled in a study program with a curriculum licensing.

This type of program is provided by a private college that holds a license to teach the courses offered by a related public college. When compared to programs offered by public colleges, these frequently have less control.

Furthermore, overseas students should thoroughly investigate whether academic programs qualify for PGWP after graduation if they intend to use the program to gain professional job experience.

  1. Select In-Demand Occupations

In 2023, the Canadian federal authorities introduced category-based draws to stimulate the focus on those proficiencies and occupations that are in demand. This draw includes the following occupations:

  1. Healthcare
  2. STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
  3. Trade Occupations
  4. Transport
  5. Agriculture and Agri-food

If a certain professional route stimulates the interest of the students, they can seek qualifications in one of the category-based draws.

To improve their chances in the Express Entry draw, a student could, for instance, seek a profession in STEM fields like web development, data science, engineering, or architecture. Though they do not provide permanent residency, these categories are subject to change.

  1. Provincial Nominee Program

Every Canadian Province or territory, except Quebec and Nunavut, has a Provincial Nominee Program to attract skilled professionals worldwide to the province.

If international students think that their CRS Score is not high enough to qualify for category-based draws, they can look and apply for the Provincial Nominee Program

However, there are two different immigration pathways under the Canada PNP - First is the Express Entry, under which the province awards an additional points 600 points to Candidates, helping them to receive Canada PR under Express Entry(also known as enhanced nomination). The second route is directly applied through PNP (also known as base nomination).

Additionally, PNP criteria can also be changed based on the province’s unique economic requirements.

  1. Enhance Language Proficiency

The Maple Country has two official languages - 1) English and 2) French, and if you are bilingual, you can explore various PR benefits.

International students can improve their CRS scores by retaking language tests or learning a second language. Canada has also launched category-based draws under French language proficiency, with a focus on these in 2024 and expected to continue in 2025 and 2026. Eligibility criteria require a minimum score of 7 in all four language abilities.

  1. Educational Credential Assessment

Canadian Express Entry System also provides points based on educational qualifications. If international students hold more than one degree, it is done outside Canada. In that case, they should get their educational credentials assessed by the designated authority and approved by Canadian authorities such as WES (World Education Service).

Conclusion

Canadian PR is a legally authorized status allowing eligible candidates to live, work, and study in Canada. It offers benefits like social security, healthcare, education, citizenship, and career opportunities.

To secure a Canadian PR, international students should stay updated on immigration policies, select in-demand occupations, apply for the Provincial Nominee Program, and enhance language proficiency. The Canadian PNP offers two pathways: Express Entry and base nomination. Bilingual students can improve their CRS scores and educational qualifications.
