If you want to expand your career in other countries, the Australia Work Visa can open various opportunities. Australia offers diverse job prospects, a high standard of living, and multiple pathways for skilled workers to gain permanent residency.

In 2024, the Australian High Commission has significantly modified the visa system, replacing the Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (TSS) with the New Skills in Demand Visa, reducing the complexity of work experience requirements.

The updated Core Skill Occupation List (CSOL) offers clear eligibility criteria. These changes help skilled professionals find relevant in-demand occupations and simplify migration.

In this article, we will be going to discuss the Australia Work Permit along with its requirements. But, before proceeding, let us understand the meaning of Working Visa Australia.

Australia Work Visa Requirements for Indians

To apply for an Australia Work Permit from India, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

    1. To apply for this work visa, your age should be between 18 to 45 years old.
    2. You should also be able to demonstrate language proficiency in the official language of English. You can take IELTS, PTE, and TOEFL language proficiency tests.
    3. You are also required to fulfil health and character requirements. For this, you must provide complete medical test reports and a police clearance certificate to the Australian High Commission.
    4. For some visas, you must get sponsorship and nomination from an Australian employer or any state/territory of Australia.
    5. You must also assess your skills through a verified body per your occupation. Additionally, your occupation should be listed under the Australia Skilled Occupation List.

How to Apply for Work Permit in Australia in 2025 from India?

For a smooth and successful Australia Work Permit application process, you must follow the following steps:

    • Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

First, check if your occupation is on the CSOL list and if you meet visa requirements.

You should first ensure that your occupation is included in the CSOL and that you are eligible for the visa. Skilled visas are point-based; therefore, your age, qualifications, work experience, and English language efficiency are determinants of your eligibility. You can estimate your points through the SkillSelect system.

    • Step 2: Gathering Needed Documents

Accumulate the paperwork that is supposed to back the application, such as:

    • Valid passport
    • Degree certificates or work experience letters to prove skills and qualifications
    • IELTS, PTE, or equivalent results for English language test
    • Health examination and police clearance meeting character and medical standards.
    • Step 3: Submission of an EOI for Skilled Visas

If you are applying for one of the points-tested skilled visas, including Subclass 189 or 190, an expression of interest must be lodged with SkillSelect.

In this respect, the respective profile will be ranked according to the points, and an ITA (invitation to apply) will be received if your score is competitive.

    • Step 4: Invitation and Application for Visa

Once you receive the invitation, you will have 60 days to process your application for a visa from the Australian Department of Home Affairs online portal. Ensure that all your documents are proper and not out of date.

    • Step 5: Pay the Visa Fees and Attend Biometrics Appointment

Pay the relevant visa fee depending on the subclass and the applicants applying. For 2025, charges differ according to the visa subclass and the number of applicants applying with you.

If necessary, attend a biometrics appointment at a visa application center.

    • Step 6: Wait for Processing and Visa Decision

Processing time varies depending on the visa type; skilled visas may take months, while employer-sponsored ones are processed much faster. To avoid delays, one must ensure that the documents are correct and respond quickly when the authorities need clarification on any information.

You will be given your grant notice upon approval, after which you may work and reside in Australia.
