TEF Canada and TCF Canada: How French Can Lower Your Canada PR Cut-Off for Indians

For applicants applying for Canada PR from India, NCLC 7 in French across all four abilities — listening, reading, writing and speaking — shown through the French test for Canada PR, TEF Canada or TCF Canada, opens eligibility for Express Entry's French-language draws, where cut-offs sit well below those of the general and Canadian Experience Class rounds. The most recent French-language round, on 27 October 2026, invited 5,000 candidates at a lowest CRS score of 407: 28 points below the previous French round on 16 October 2026 (5,000 invitations at 435) and 112 points below the most recent Canadian Experience Class cut-off of 519.

That 407 figure is the score of the lowest-ranked candidate invited in that round, not a fixed pass mark. An individual outcome still turns on the full CRS profile — age, education, work experience, and English and French results — and future French rounds may close higher or lower. As of the latest check on 30 October 2026, #452 remains the most recent French round; the newest Express Entry round overall, #453 (28 October, Transport occupations, 150 invitations at 477), belongs to a different category and does not affect the French figures.

WHY THE OLD COMPARISON IS OUT OF DATE

An earlier version of this calendar item compared French at 435 with Canadian Experience Class at 519. That comparison is stale: the 27 October French round reset the French figure to 407. The reframed comparison is therefore French 407 against Canadian Experience Class 519 — a 112-point gap in that round — not 435 against 519. Cut-offs are round-specific, so neither figure is a permanent pass mark.

WHAT NCLC 7 ACTUALLY MEANS: TEF CANADA OR TCF CANADA

NCLC 7 is the French-language benchmark IRCC uses, roughly CEFR B2. For the French-language category you need NCLC 7 or higher in each of the four abilities, not an average across them. The only French tests IRCC accepts for Express Entry are TEF Canada and TCF Canada — the TEF Canada test or exam, and the TCF Canada test — and results must be less than two years old when you complete your profile and when you apply. DELF and DALF are respected qualifications, but they are not accepted for Express Entry points.

French also adds CRS points on top of your core language score: 25 additional points if you reach NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities and your English is CLB 4 or lower, or 50 additional points if your English is CLB 5 or higher in all four abilities. Those additional points are separate from eligibility for the French-language draws themselves — you can benefit from the points even in a round that is not French-specific, provided the rest of your profile qualifies.

French-language cut-offs in 2026 have ranged from 382 to 435, and IRCC had held 12 French rounds in 2026 by 27 October, totalling 60,500 invitations. That 2026 range and total, previously flagged as secondary-roundup figures only, were corroborated on 30 October 2026 across several sources synced to IRCC's rounds data. The swing from 435 to 407 in eleven days is the point: French cut-offs move sharply from round to round, and a single round is not a trend. Candidates invited in the 27 October round had a tie-break for profiles created before 13 July 2026 at 19:22 UTC, and invited candidates have 60 days to submit a complete permanent residence application.

WHAT THIS MEANS FROM INDIA, SPECIFICALLY

For applicants applying from India, French is a lever you control without needing Canadian work experience — unlike the Canadian Experience Class, which requires time working in Canada. That is why it matters here: an Indian applicant with a strong profile but no Canadian experience can still enter the French draws, provided the French test result is in place and the applicant is eligible under one of the Express Entry programmes (Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades or Canadian Experience Class).

Province Immigration provides French classes for Canada PR, alongside IELTS, PTE, CELPIP and TOEFL training. The honest part of this route is the timeline: reaching NCLC 7 from scratch takes months of sustained study, not weeks. French is not a quick fix to apply before the 3 November 2026 CRS rescoring and the draw pause that follows it — draws pause from 3 November while profiles are recalculated, potentially for up to two weeks, with no restart date confirmed. It is a medium-term lever — worth starting now if Canada PR is a 2026–2027 plan, and worth checking carefully if someone promises it as an instant score boost.

HOW TO USE THE FRENCH ROUTE, STEP BY STEP

  1. Check your current CRS first. Run a free eligibility check before committing to months of French study, so you know how far French actually needs to take you.
  2. Take a placement test. Find out whether you are starting from zero or already near B2 — that decides whether French is a realistic lever for you at all.
  3. Target NCLC 7 in all four abilities. A weak fourth skill blocks both the category and the additional points, so preparation must cover listening, reading, writing and speaking, not just conversation.
  4. Book TEF Canada or TCF Canada, and watch validity. Results must still be valid when you submit your profile and when you apply, so time the test around your profile, not the other way round.
  5. Enter the pool and keep the profile current. A French result only helps once it is in your Express Entry profile; an unsubmitted test score invites nobody.

WHO SHOULD NOT BET EVERYTHING ON FRENCH

French does not replace education credentials, an Educational Credential Assessment, or work-experience documentation, and it does not guarantee an invitation, a visa or a timeline. If your CRS is far below even the French range after the additional points, or if French study would delay a stronger route — for example a provincial nomination you already qualify for — the stronger route should come first. A counsellor should confirm that trade-off for your profile rather than a blog post deciding it.
