New Category for Express Entry System

Canada is all set to prioritise foreign skilled military recruits as a new priority category under the Express Entry system. The introduction of a new category for the skilled military recruits was announced with the recently released Defence Industrial Strategy, which emphasises the nation's ongoing immigration initiatives to strengthen its defence forces.

The new category under the Express Entry system will invite foreign nationals for permanent residency with lower CRS scores compared to other Express Entry invitations. Just like other categories, the new will also be evaluated on certain factors like work experience, educational qualifications, and job offer requirements.

Requirements for the New Category

IRCC has set some requirements for Foreign Skilled Military Recruits, which are meant to be necessary while applying application. Some of the requirements are:

General Eligibility

Applicants who are seeking an Invitation to Apply (ITA) under the new category for the Express Entry system are required to meet the basic eligibility requirements expressed under the three programs, namely;

The major requirement set for the new category is that the applicant must be an “ eligible foreign national who is serving in a recognised foreign military”, and their expression of interest must be in the Express Entry pool.

Work Experience Requirements

Eligible candidates applying under the new category must have certain work experience requirements, such as:

  • A minimum of 10 years of continuous service (in a recognised foreign military)
  • Work experience and training corresponding to one of the three eligible occupations under this category:
  • Commissioned officers of the Canadian Armed Forces (NOC 40042)
  • Specialised members of the Canadian Armed Forces (NOC 42102)
  • Operations members of the Canadian Armed Forces (NOC 43204)

Job Offer Requirements

Eligible applicants who have a job offer from the Canadian Armed Forces must meet certain requirements, such as:

  • For continuous full-time work in Canada for at least three years
  • In one of the three above-listed eligible occupations for this category
  • Made by the Canadian Forces Recruiting Group

Educational Requirements

Skilled Migrant Recruit category requires prospective candidates to have certain educational requirements, such as:

  • A completed two- year post- secondary credentials within Canada or abroad. The two year credentials mean a college degree or a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Applicants with education completed outside Canada will have to undergo an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).

Complete Analysis of the New Announcement

The introduction of this new category under the Express Entry system highlights Canada’s growing focus on strengthening national security while addressing skilled labour shortages in the defence forces. With the increasing global tensions in the world, Canada aims to attract skilled, disciplined, trained and experienced professionals to immigrate and quickly settle in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).

As an allocation of securing lower CRS scores for the eligible candidates, Canada aims to attract a large number of individuals under this new category who may be disadvantaged in scoring fewer points in the age or language factors. With only three occupations were selected under the category suggests that only a few candidates will be considered, thereby increasing the chances of invitation to more candidates.

Since the job offer from the Canadian Work Force is mandatory, it implies job security in the country, making it one of the best and most secure pathways to secure permanent residency in Canada.
