Victoria — 190 open, 491 not yet open
Victoria has opened Registrations of Interest (ROIs) for the Victoria 190 visa for 2026-27, with 900 nomination places. These are places, not invitations already issued. The subclass 491 ROI process has not opened yet, and 491 nomination places are not finalised. ROIs submitted in earlier programme years do not carry over, so a new ROI is needed for 2026-27.
Victoria selects candidates through the Victorian Points Test, a separate scoring framework from the 65-point SkillSelect floor, and there is no fixed pass mark. Invitations go out through two routes: the most competitive candidates across all eligible occupations, and specific eligible occupations within the designated priority industries of healthcare, social assistance, education and construction receiving priority consideration. This priority applies to specific eligible occupations in those industries, not every occupation in them.
An ROI costs A$60 excluding GST (A$66 including GST). If you are invited, the nomination application costs A$180 excluding GST (A$198 including GST), payable only if invited. GST applies only if you are in Australia at the time of payment. See the official fees page for the current amounts.
New South Wales — 190 active, 491 closed for the current programme year
NSW 190 visa selection is active in 2026-27 and is invitation-only: NSW selects candidates from SkillSelect EOIs. Your occupation must sit in an ANZSCO unit group on the NSW Skills List, and residency requirements differ for onshore and offshore applicants. NSW states that invitation rounds occur throughout the financial year, with no predetermined or publicly announced dates. Check the NSW 190 page for the latest settings.
NSW subclass 491 nominations are closed for the current programme year. The NSW 491 page states that all nomination places have been allocated, and pathways 1 and 3 are closed to new applications.
What this means for the federal route
The last officially published SkillSelect round was on 4 June 2026, with 10,000 subclass 189 invitations. The 15 October 2026 round has been widely reported, but official results have not been published, so any reported 15 October cut-off should not be treated as official. See the official SkillSelect invitation rounds for published results. A state nomination adds 5 points for subclass 190 and 15 points for subclass 491, and receiving a nomination triggers an invitation to apply for the visa.
Elsewhere in October
Tasmania's subclass 190 and 491 programme has been open since 17 August 2026, with invitation rounds on 1 October (38 for 190 and 34 for 491), 8 October (37 and 24) and 15 October (45 and 32). The ACT held a 190-only Canberra Matrix round on 12 October 2026, issuing 261 invitations. The Northern Territory is not accepting new nomination applications at this time, with onshore subclass 491 considered by exception only. Queensland ROIs are closed while the state awaits advice on future programme settings, and Western Australia has published no 2026-27 status — its page is still headed 2025-26.
What to check before you lodge
1. Check your occupation's eligibility first, including the NSW Skills List and the Victorian skills assessment and occupation requirements for your chosen Australia state nomination 2026-27 pathway.
2. Keep your SkillSelect EOI accurate and up to date, with documents ready to support every claim.
3. If Victoria is your target, submit a new ROI for 2026-27 and assess your competitiveness under the Victorian Points Test, which looks beyond the 65-point EOI floor.
4. Do not rely on subclass 491 in NSW or Victoria for now: NSW 491 is closed for the current programme year and Victoria is not accepting 491 ROIs.
5. Never pay for a fake job offer or a guaranteed invitation. No one can guarantee a state nomination or a visa grant.
