Canada Study Permit Plans for the Year 2026: 4,08,000 Study Permits for International Students

IRCC has issued its plan for Canada Study permits to be issued in the year 2026. On November 25, 2025, IRCC announced its plan for increasing study permits to be issued for the upcoming year.

For the year 2026, Canada has thought of increasing its study permit limit, making a total of 4,08,000 study permits for international students.

Explore How Study Permits will be Distributed in the Year 2026?

The allocation of Study Permits in the upcoming year will be done strategically in order to satisfy both the existing international students and newcomers to the country as directed under the Canada immigration level plan for the year 2026- 2028.

Out of 4,08,000 study permits, 1,55,000 study permits will be reserved for the newcomers and already existing international students. While the remaining 2,53,000 study permits will be distributed among students looking for extensions for current and returning students.

The following table bifurcated the study permits according to certain factors such as:

Type of Candidate

Number of Permits Issued

PAL/ TAL Required Candidates

1,80,000

Master’s and Doctoral Students (PAL/ TAL exempted)

49,000

Primary and secondary school (kindergarten to grade 12, also PAL/ TAL exempt)

1,15,000

Other PAL /TAL- exempt study permit applicants

64,000

Total

4,08,000

Canada earlier this year, has also taken a great initiative for graduate students, looking to pursue Master’s or Doctorate in the country. It was announced that graduate students looking for Master’s or Doctorate do not have to obtain PAL (provincial attestation letter) or TAL (territorial attestation letter) for further studies from the year 2026. This initiative was taken to ease off the study permit procedures for higher education.

Conclusion

The initiative of Canada study permits to be allocated in the year 2026, highlights the government’s idea of bridging the gap between international borders via educational route. With the Canada study permit, individuals earn an opportunity of converting their Study permit to Canada PR.

Although the Canada Study permit is valid for up to 4 years, international students after completing their studies, can apply for post-graduation work permit and later settle as Canada permanent residents.
