Canada Super Visa: Reduces Income Requirements for Parents and Grandparents

In a significant move, Canada had eased off its income requirements set previously by the Canadian Immigration department for parents and grandparents on Canada Super Visa

The key policy changes, effective from March 31, 2026, will make all the arrangements more flexible for applicants who wish to bring their longing families to the country.

What is a Canada Super Visa?

Canada super visa is a unique pathway that enables parents and grandparents of Canada permanent residents or citizens to visit and stay in the country. Through this super visa, eligible Canada permanent residents or citizens can sponsor their parents and grandparents, enabling them to stay for longer periods. It allows its holder with visitor status to stay in Canada for up to 10 years, for a maximum of 5 years at a time.

Under this program, applicants who aspire to bring their parents and grandparents to the country are required to display that they meet the minimum income threshold. With this, they demonstrate that they can financially support their family members during their stay in the country.

What’s With the Latest Update ?

Previously with the Canada super visa, eligible sponsors (Canadian permanent residents or citizens) were required to demonstrate the eligibility of minimum income threshold. They were required to meet or exceed the Low Income Cut- off (LICO) for their family size based on one taxation year.

Whereas with the latest update, presented on March 23, 2026, IRCC has provided additional ways to meet income requirements. Let us explore which additional ways are provided which can help hosts to meet minimum income requirements.

Two New Ways to Meet Income Requirements

Canada Immigration Department has laid out two new ways for hosts to meet income requirements which are as follows:

❖  Extended Income Assessment Period

Under this update, eligible sponsors can qualify to bring in their parents and grandparents to the country by meeting the income requirements in either of the two tax years preceding the date of application.

Earlier this update, IRCC only used to assess the income requirements from the tax year immediately before the application was submitted.

❖  Allowing Parents and Grandparents to Supplement the Host’s Income

Under this update, it allows part of the visiting parent’s and grandparent’s income to be included in the calculation. Under this method, the eligible sponsor must first meet the required minimum income percentage of the total income threshold. The visiting parents or grandparents income can then be added to cover the remaining amount.

These above-mentioned two new ways introduced by IRCC provide comfort for the families who wish to bring their longing families to Canada. With these income relaxations, Canada has prioritized family reunifications which were earlier often hindered by income requirements.
