New Zealand Green List is considered as a direct pathway to permanent residency as it provides professionals with in-demand occupations, an opportunity to live and work in the country.  Over the past few years, New Zealand has experienced a growing shortage of skilled and talented professionals, and to curb the shortage of professionals, the Department of Immigration of New Zealand (INZ) has outlined a list that details certain occupations eligible for priority immigration pathway, i.e, Green List Pathway. 

New Zealand Green List enables professionals to immigrate to the country via two tiers:

❖  Tier 1 Green List New Zealand

Also known as Straight to Residence visa NZ, the tier 1 occupations lists the occupations which directly pave the way to residency visa. It allows professionals of certain occupations to find employment, and work and reside in the country for an indefinite period of time. Applicants of 55 years or younger are eligible for a Straight to Residence visa New Zealand to obtain permanent residency.  

❖  Tier 2 Green List New Zealand

Tier 2 Green list New Zealand, also known as New Zealand work to residence visa allows professionals to immigrate to the country and after continuous stay of 2 years on a resident visa on certain occupation, they become eligible for permanent residency visa. On the basis of qualification, experience earned and registration of occupation, they can apply for New Zealand Work to Residence visa. 

For instance, two friends Sahil and Rohit desire to immigrate to New Zealand in search of better opportunities. With their aim of becoming permanent residents, we can check how New Zealand Green list can help them in achieving their New Zealand permanent residency.

To be eligible for this visa, he requires a full- time job or a job offer from an accredited employer  from the country. With this visa, Sahil has to pay NZD $ 6450 for his visa application and will take approximately 4 months to receive his visa status.

On the other hand, Rohit who is a Special Education Teacher, his occupation falls under Tier 2 occupations also known as New Zealand Work to Residence visa. He becomes eligible for permanent residency after having a work experience of 2 years on the same occupation and residing on a resident visa in the country. At present he should also have a job or job offer for at least 12 months. With this visa, Rohit has to bear NZD $ 6450  and later apply for permanent residency visa and work and stay in the country for an indefinite period of time.
